Premium Intraocular (Smart) Lens Surgery in Izmir

Premium Intraocular (Smart) Lens Surgery in Izmir

What is a Smart Lens?

Lenses referred to as Smart Lenses or Smart Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) are actually called multifocal and trifocal intraocular lenses in ophthalmology. Commonly called “Smart Lenses” by the public, these intraocular lenses have long been used in suitable patients during cataract surgery.

Intraocular lenses are classified as monofocal (single focus),multifocal (multiple focus),and trifocal (three-focus) lenses. Patients who receive a monofocal lens during cataract surgery generally do not need glasses for distance vision but still require glasses for near tasks such as reading. Those who receive multifocal or trifocal lenses typically do not need glasses for either near or distance vision.

Patients with multifocal lenses implanted during cataract surgery can read books, use computers, watch television, and continue their daily lives without glasses. During cataract surgery, the appropriate lens for the patient is determined based on detailed preoperative examinations and the individual structure of the eye.

Smart Intraocular Lenses

For patients over 40 who experience near-vision problems, we use Smart Intraocular Lenses to address vision issues by replacing the natural lens. Many questions arise from patients about the origin of the lenses—whether they are from East Asia, China, domestic, or American-made.

There is a misconception that “bad lenses perform poorly” and “good lenses perform excellently.” The most important factor in Smart Lenses is how well the lens filters harmful rays such as ultraviolet (UV),X-rays, and radiation, thereby protecting the retina and macula. Another key factor is visual rehabilitation for distance, near, and intermediate vision. Different categories of intraocular lenses—bifocal or multifocal—exist to provide clear vision at all distances and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after surgery.

Toric IOL Premium Intraocular Lens

The Toric IOL Premium lens technology is a new solution for patients with astigmatism who previously needed reading glasses. Multifocal toric lenses are suitable for:

  • Patients with early to advanced cataracts who have worn glasses for astigmatism for a long time
  • Individuals over 55 who want to avoid both near and distance glasses and have 0.75 diopters or more astigmatism
  • Patients over 55 with hyperopia and astigmatism who need both near and distance correction
  • Individuals over 45 with high myopia combined with astigmatism

These lenses provide both near and distance vision correction while reducing dependence on glasses after cataract surgery.

What is a Smart Lens? Why is it Preferred?

Everyone has a natural lens inside their eye. This lens is transparent and flexible. Thanks to its elasticity, it changes shape to focus on objects at different distances, allowing us to see clearly both near and far.

As we age, the natural lens in our eye first loses its flexibility. It can no longer change shape to focus on close objects, making near vision difficult. Later, the lens may also lose its transparency, leading to cataract formation.

Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens)

After around age 40, when the natural lens loses flexibility, it can be replaced with a new artificial lens called a Smart Lens. This lens restores the ability to focus at near, intermediate, and far distances, providing clear vision at all distances. Once implanted, the patient’s eye prescription no longer progresses. Cataract surgery is performed only once, and cataracts do not recur in the treated eye.

Who Can Receive a Smart Lens?

Candidates are typically over 40 and experience vision problems in near, far, or both distances, and want to be free from glasses for life. Due to environmental factors, the age at which cataracts develop has been decreasing. Eyes with multifocal lenses can see clearly both near and far.

Younger patients may also be candidates if their prescription is too high to be corrected with laser treatment.

Patients with existing cataracts who wish to see clearly at both near and far distances after surgery are ideal candidates for Smart Lenses.

Even patients who previously had laser vision correction and later develop cataracts, experiencing difficulty seeing near or far, can benefit from Smart Lens implantation.

How is Smart Lens Surgery Performed?

The procedure is done on each eye on separate days, with an interval of a few days to a week depending on the patient’s condition. Each procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. The eyes are numbed with eye drops. General anesthesia, sedation, or overnight hospital stay is usually not required. The procedure is painless.

The natural lens is removed, and the Smart Lens is placed in its position. After surgery, the eye is covered with a bandage, and the patient goes home. The bandage remains overnight and is removed by the doctor during a follow-up visit the next day. The patient can see immediately and resume normal activities.

The same procedure is performed on the other eye after a few days. Follow-up appointments continue weekly and monthly, aside from regular eye drop use.

The Importance of Multifocal Lenses, Also Known as Smart Lenses

These lenses provide clear vision at near, far, and intermediate distances and are designed to last a lifetime. The most important feature of Smart Lenses is the clarity they provide at intermediate distances. This includes essential visual ranges such as computer use, watching television, and reaching kitchen countertops, where sharp vision is particularly important.

The quality and type of the intraocular lens implanted directly affect patients’ postoperative eye health and visual quality.

Smart Lenses also help eliminate vision problems that may occur after cataract surgery. In particular, Toric Multifocal Intraocular Lenses can correct myopia, hyperopia, and high astigmatism simultaneously, providing patients with clear, glasses-free vision.
