Pachymetry is the measurement of the thickness of the cornea, the transparent front layer of the eye. Today, pachymetry is performed using computer-based systems without any device or instrument touching the eye, and the measurement is completed in a short time.
In a normal cornea, the average central thickness is expected to be around 550 microns. These values may vary among healthy individuals. If the eye is healthy, such variations in thickness do not pose any risk.
