Atagöz Medical Center Ophthalmology Specialist, Op. Dr. Onur Aydın, provided information about aesthetic eyelid surgery. He noted that sagging eyelids and under-eye bags caused by aging can be corrected with a single operation. Dr. Aydın explained:
“With age and the effect of gravity, the skin on the eyebrows and eyelids becomes loose, lax, and sagging occurs. Additionally, particularly in the lower eyelids, fat tissues can herniate forward, creating puffiness. This not only affects appearance but can also obstruct vision if the loosened upper eyelid covers the eye.”
Aesthetic eyelid surgery removes excess skin and, if present, herniated fat tissue. This restores a youthful appearance and improves the patient’s vision. A faint scar remains along the upper eyelid but gradually fades over time. The eyelids are among the least visible areas of the human body in terms of scarring.
Regarding eligibility, Ophthalmology Specialist Op. Dr. Onur Aydın stated: “Typically, candidates are over 30 years old, have sagging and puffiness in the upper and/or lower eyelids, and have no other significant health problems.”
Dr. Aydın explained: “The surgery is performed in a hospital under the supervision of an anesthesiologist in an operating room. Local anesthesia is generally used, and if necessary, intravenous sedation may be applied without general anesthesia. Depending on the patient’s concerns, either the upper or lower eyelids—or both—can be operated on simultaneously. The procedure usually takes 1–1.5 hours, and patients can go home the same day.”
Dr. Aydın continued regarding recovery: “The early postoperative period is generally comfortable. Swelling and bruising around the eyes may occur. Patients may experience dryness, burning, blurred vision, increased tearing, or light sensitivity. During the first few days, it may be difficult to fully close the eyes. These symptoms are normal and typically resolve within a week. Sutures are removed after 5 days.”
The surgery usually provides excellent results. In rare cases, revision surgery may be required. Most patients can return to work after 3 days. The new shape of the eyelids may be affected by gravity over time and, depending on the patient’s individual characteristics, results can last from 5–6 years or even a lifetime.
